Essex based Caulfield Contractors Limited have expanded their fleet with the purchase of five Komatsu Crawler Excavators. These include two 21 tonne PC210LC-8’s, two 13 tonne PC138US-10’s and one 22 ton PC228USLC-8. A rise in market confidence prompted the excavator order as Director Nick Caulfield explains; ‘We felt in recent months that there has been more optimism in the marketplace and so we placed the order in an expectance of an upturn in demand. The decision has been the correct one as we have now secured additional contracts and with these additional excavators we have been in the perfect position to react quickly to secure the new work’.
Caulfield Contractors is a private limited company which has been involved in delivering key projects to the civil engineering and building industries and has drainage, utilities and tunnelling works and its core expertise. Previously having bought Hitachi and Volvo Excavators, this is the first time that the company has chosen Komatsu. ‘After researching the market, we short listed six potential suppliers and invited them to tender for the package order,’ said Nick. ‘Komatsu not only were competitive on price, but their machines were better in terms of fuel consumption, which was another important factor in our decision making. Coupled with good design and ergonomics, this made for a winning combination and we were happy to award Komatsu the contract, who were also able to fulfil the order relatively quickly.’

Four of the Komatsu Excavators are already out on jobs, including the widening of a portion of the A23 in Sussex and the London Crossrail Project at Pudding Mill Lane, where the PC138USLC-10 excavator has already shown its credentials as Nick confirms; ‘The demands of the Crossrail Project meant that we needed an excavator that could work in a rather confined area and one that produces less emissions. With its short tail swing and stage 3b compliant engine, the PC138US-10 has been prefect for the job.’

Eamonn Delaney Marubeni-Komatsu Area Sales Manager adds; ‘I was delighted that Komatsu won the contract in the face of strong competition. I hope that this will be the start of a long and positive relationship between Komatsu and Caulfield Contractors in the years to come.’
