Loughborough based CR Civil Engineering Limited have replaced their ageing 14 tonne Volvo 140b machines with two new Komatsu PC138US-10 excavators. As Dean Thomas Plant Manager for CR Civil Engineering explains; ‘Although we considered Volvo once again and looked at Hyundai too, we felt that Komatsu produced the best overall package for these machines in terms of quality, price, availability and service support’.
In addition, CR Civil Engineering have also purchased two larger 23 tonne Komatsu PC228USLC-8 excavators. As Dean adds; ‘Like the PC138’s a key requirement for us with the larger PC228’s was the short tail swing feature. We do a lot of work on motorway central reservations, where working space is at a premium and safety of our workforce paramount. These excavators fit the bill perfectly for this type of job. We also had an additional hydraulic circuit fitted to the excavators so that they can also use a power tilt bucket. We also do a lot of railway embankment work, so having the ability to angle the bucket on a slope greatly increases productivity. The 90 degree power tilt (45 degrees in either direction), was supplied by Exac-One Ltd, who are based in Worcestershire. Whilst the additional hydraulic circuit was fitted by Komatsu’.

Dean continues; ‘Although we have only had these Komatsu excavators for a short while, they have been reliable and quite economical in terms of fuel consumption. Plus the operators love them, which is great too’.
